AbstractThe article discusses requirements, rules and procedures for data sharing. As of October 1, 2003, the National Institutes of Health requires all proposals for grants with direct costs greater than $500,000 in any single year to specify plans for sharing research data or explain why data sharing is not possible. The Department of Health and Human Services in accordance with provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 issued privacy rule which permits research use of individually identifiable health information.
