AbstractThis course, "Introduction to Environmental Studies" was taught at Trinity University by Dr. William Grove-Fanning in the spring of 2013. The course focused on how the modern environmental movement has conceptualized and attempted to solve environmental problems in the past, and uses this historical approach to bring out the ideas, motifs and metaphors that have come to define the modern environmental movement. The course then investigated whether and to what degree local issues or practices reflect this larger conversation, and tried to articulate solutions to these issues in light of climate change and recent criticisms of modern-day environmentalism. The syllabus includes learning objectives, a description of the online discussion component of the class, and the readings and topics for each class during the semester.
