Science policy mandates across the industrialized world are calling for more active role for the public, both for earlier participation in policy decisions and expanded notions of science and technology governance. This essay introduces a special issue of the journal that brings together articles that look into the meaning, efficacy and responsibility of engaged sciences studies scholarship as a public matter.
