AbstractThis is one of a series of nine scenarios developed by Michael Loui and C. K. Gunsalus, which asks students to act out a case study looking at the ethical issues raised in mentoring relationships between students and advisors. This file, in pdf format, includes instructions for use and discussion guidelines, general principles that apply to mentoring, a summary, resources, and handouts to be given to various participants. The case study describes a meeting between a over-committed faculty member who needs the data results of a project his graduate student is working on and wants to have a quick and to-the-point meeting. The student thinks there has been a miscommunication about the research project he is working on due to meetings being far too short in the past and wants to have a longer meeting to explain why she wishes to start the research from scratch to rule out any contamination or equipment problems.
