Programs

The Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions supports a number of programs and events every year designed to stimulate discussion between academics, professionals, and students on current and emerging topics in professional ethics. We have sponsored seminars on research ethics, assisted professional organizations in drafting a code of ethics, and held conferences on incorporating ethics in undergraduate and graduate curricula with our Ethics Across the Curriculum program.

CSEP is also pleased to help support the Ethics Bowl, a yearly event where teams of students compete to give the best answers questions based on ethical cases. A panel of judges rate the team's answers on soundness of reasoning, focus on ethically relevant factors, and deliberative thoughtfulness. The Ethics Bowl has proved to be a fun and effective way to engage students in the study ethical issues and help develop practical ethical reasoning and the ability to hold intelligent ethical dialogues with peers. Robert Ladenson, a faculty associate of the Center, developed and first presented the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl at the annual Association for Practical and Professional Ethics meeting in 1996 and it has steadily grown over the years, and over forty undergraduate teams from colleges and universities across the country participated in the 2006 competition. Many other universities have started their own Ethics Bowl teams and compete in their regional areas. Starting in 2007, teams for the national competition will be selected through a series of regional competitions.
