| Abstract | The article discusses the scientific norms developed by sociologist Robert K. Merton. Norms and their relation to social groups is explored and defined. Merton's norms involved communality, universalism, disinteredness, and organized skepticism, which are all discussed. Sociologist Michael Mulkay's criticism of Merton's scientific norms is discussed. The problem of using Mertonian norms to empirically evaluate scientists and their work is discussed and the authors suggest that there are norm/counternorm pairs beyond those pointed out by Merton, which are governance/administration and quality/quantity. |
