AbstractThis article discusses some of the ethical issues surrounding how professional associations function in Costa Rica, where most practitioners of professions, such as lawyers, physicians, engineers, and journalists are required to join an association to practice their calling. The author discusses some of the ethical problems with this system, and discusses the need for professional associations to require members to continue to keep up with technical innovations in their field in order to stay certified.
