AbstractXYZ Hose Company for many years made a plastic-reinforced hose that was used by farmers to fertilize their fields with anhydrous ammonia, a substances that reacts violently with water, so care must be taken in disbursing it. When XYZ found that its hoses deteriorated over years of use and caused numerous accidents, the company pulled the product from the market and had to make substantial out-of-court settlements with farmers who where injured using damaged hoses.
