AbstractThis case study looks at the results of a conference held in 1973 where around 100 leading scientists in the field convened to formulate safety measures to direct the development of recombinant DNA technology in the United States.  The regulatory guidelines and risk categories for rDNA experiments have been adopted and are now widely used by the U.S. government today. The case includes a chronology of events, differing views on the conference and its resulting guidelines, teaching notes, and useful websites.
