AbstractWhile the United States has improved conditions in its prisons, the use of prison labor continues. Advocates of such work programs claim that inmates who participate in such programs gain valuable skills and are more likely to function as productive members of society when they are released. Opponents of these programs point out that jobs held by convicts are taken away from the most economically hard-pressed segments of society.
