Abstract

When an open piece of land near the city of Lubbock, Texas is found to have extremely elevated levels of nitrate in the groundwater, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality cited the City for polluting this piece of land, and speculated that the growing population of prairie dogs in that area had helped spread the rate of pollution, as the animals' burrowing habitat allowed effluent to pass unfiltered into deep ground levels. How should the City of Lubbock deal with this issue? Kill off the prairie dogs?
