AbstractStella, a large Saint Bernard, drove her owner's neighbors crazy. Finally, the apartment building's co-op board ruled that if the owner could not keep Stella's exuberant bark under control, either Stella or the owner would have to go. In a last-ditch effort, the owner has Stella debarked, a surgery in which the animal's vocal cords are severed. The decision caused controversy in the veterinary office, where one doctor saw the procedure as necessary, and his colleague claimed it went against t hat American Veterinary Medical Association's code of ethics.
