AbstractThis article explores the limits of cost-benefits analysis, and argues that in some cases, such environmental protection and public safety, governments should have the ability to pass laws for ethical reasons rather than just for primarily economic reasons. The author then goes on to explore of some economists are looking for new ways for cost-benefit analysis to account for for the ideals and aspirations of citizens, and finally argues that while cost-benefit analysis is a useful tool, we must rely on the discussion of these issues on the basis of reason and argument to try and find a solution to some of the pressing ethical issues that we face today.
