Abstract

The article presents a review of research on the decisional capacity of patients with mental health disorders, discusses how mania characteristics may affect research participation and provides recommendations for investigators and institutional review boards (IRBs) concerning research participation of individuals with bipolar mania. The influence of the 1998 report from the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) on mental health research is also discussed.
