Abstract

The article discusses how volunteers in clinical trials define research. Understanding and voluntariness in international research have also been discussed. Participation in a clinical trials is determined by several factors. However, voluntariness might be compromised by a variety of factors such as poverty, limited access to medical care and socio-economic status. Participants in six different randomized, controlled infectious disease trials were interviewed. The results indicate variations in participants' understanding about the purpose of the clinical trials and about the voluntariness of trial participation.
