AbstractThe article examines how researchers keep their promise of confidentiality and how that promise is sometimes challenged during primary data collection. It is noted that researchers promise confidentiality because their purpose is to protect subjects from the specific harms that might come from disclosure. Confidentiality involves a commitment to respect persons regardless of possible physical, social or economic harms. The authors offer some suggestions for researchers who tend to overlook the aspect of confidentiality in their research. It is suggested that the researchers should review the procedures related to protection of information across multiple sites and during transfer.
