Abstract

The article reports on the study about the roles of nonscientist Institutional Review Board (IRB) members including clerics, lawyers, and laypersons at National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. The study shows that two-thirds of nonscientists and more than three-fourths of scientist IRB members agreed that nonscientists represent community view. Nearly one-third described nonscientists' role as public representative, and about one-fifth depicted their role as community representative.
