AbstractJames Cameron, director of the movie Avatar, had become philanthropically involved a conflict over the Belo Monte damn project in the Amazon rain forest. The Belo Monte dam is part of a proposed hydroelectric project on the Xingu River in Brazil and will potentially place a large role in the development of Brazil's national economy. However, environmentalists and local indigenous are concerned that the flooding and rerouting of the Xingu river required by the project will likely displace between 20,000 and 40,000 people, drastically effecting many traditional communities' way of life.
