The authors describe the change in ABET criteria for engineering programs to no longer requiring humanities and social sciences, but instead requiring a general education component that complements the technical component of the curriculum. They argue that one way to use this change to improve the general education for civil engineers would be to incorporate a theme, such as sustainability and sustainable development.
