AbstractThe ASCE code of ethics has been revised many times since its adoption in 1914. The Code began as a virtual copy of the code of the Institution of Civil Engineers, London that was adopted in 1912. Its primary emphasis was on controlling the practice of engineering and engineer-to-engineer relationships. Over time, especially with the adoption of the ABET fundamental principles in 1975, it has moved to an emphasis on the obligation of the engineer to promote health, safety, and welfare of the public. Unfortunately, the code is now a mixture of a code of professional practice and a code of ethics under the heading of a code of ethics. This paper suggests a new code of ethics and accompanying guidelines to professional practice.
