Abstract

The article examines draft guidelines set forth by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to govern federal funding of human stem cell research, which includes human embryonic stem cell research. While researchers state that there are positive aspects of the guidelines, many are also concerned about rhetoric within the draft that may negate many widely used cell lines. Also, areas that were previously addressed by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) seem to be omitted from the body of the draft guidelines. The NIH states that cell lines used in research must have been previously approved; otherwise, they will be disqualified for use in federally funded research.
