Abstractthe article discusses some of the practical difficulties associated with the implementation of codes of ethics in an organization. The author outline how the use of codes, and the requirement for uniformity and control of ethical behavior is held in place by a number of assumptions relating to the function of codes, and how this framework can help alienate code users. The authors argue that this alienation is most likely do to a failure to understand the practical nature of codes, and methods of getting around these misunderstandings. The authors focus on the Australian University Codes of Ethics to illustrate this issue.
