AbstractIn 1992 the National Academy of Science Panel on Scientific Responsibility and the Conduct of Research release a series of recommendations for strengthening the research enterprise and to clarify the responsibilities of scientists, research institutions and government agencies. Seven of these recommendations related directly to responsibilities that rest on the research institution. The authors explore and expand upon these recommendations, first looking at what is meant by research misconduct, and finally looking at the issues, procedures and concerns associated with the role of research institutions in handling these allegations when their arise.
