AbstractPoliticans have switched parties for as long as political parties have been in place. In 2004, U.S. Representative Ralph Hall made the switch from Democrat to Republican. He stated that he did so because the Democratic Party refused his request for district appropriations because he voted against a bill supported by the Democratic Party. Another motivation in his switch may have come from Hall's appreciation for being spared a potentially career devastating blow in the redistricting that cost many Texas Democrats their seats in 2003.
