Abstract

Grave safety concerns about the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the SR 520 bridge in Washington State have been debated for the past decade. However, little had been done because of the fragmentation of stakeholders and the inability to reach an agreement. An independent review found that both the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the SR520 Bridge needed to be replaced, but in 2007, voters in Washington State voted down two (competing) plans for replacing the viaduct.
