AbstractAfter the passage of Proposition 8 in California which amended the state constitution to bar same-sex couples from civil marriage, an anonymous individual put together a website, wwweightmaps.com, that takes the names and zip codes of people who donated on behalf of the ballot measure to pass Proposition 8, and overlays this data on a Google map. Some of the couples who donated money to outlaw same-sex marriage have received death threats and had their businesses boycotted. Some fear that new technologies coupled with disclosure laws could discourage voters from participating in the political process, others claim that this level of transparency promotes an informed electorate. However disclosure lawas are meant to expose powerful private interests that are trying to influence the government, not private citizens who are only donating a small amount of money to a political cause.
