AbstractJoe McKiernan who donated sperm to his friend Ivonne Fergusson, had a verbal agreement with her that his role would be anonymous, that he would not be financially responsible, and that he would not seek visitation or parental rights. Five years later, Ivonne sues Joe for retroactive child support. In the following court ruling, Joe was held liable for child support, as they had only had a verbal agreement. Later, in 2007, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that oral agreement between parties would stand, and that neither Joe nor other sperm donors should be held liable to financially support their progeny. What, if any, are the responsibilities of sperm donors?
