AbstractThis article discusses how organizations and individuals can avoid the necessity of whistleblowing by creating avenues who problems and concerns can be addressed in an open way that involves management input. Davis discusses the importance of having legal protections in place for whistleblowers, but why it is so difficult to protect them, namely that whistleblowing is already a sign that problems exist in the organization, the bad feelings managers are likely to have about a whistleblower as they have to deal with questions and public fallout over the problems brought to light, and the loss of trust a whistleblower has in her organization. The article looks at protections that can be put in place for whistleblowers, and actions organizations and individuals can take to avoid whistleblowing altogether.
