AbstractThis report summarizes concerns about Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversight of social science research, discusses the relationship IRBs have to issues of academic freedom, and describes government regulations and their application to this kind of research. The final section of the report discusses recommendations of how IRBs can better oversee social science research, including the idea that biomedical standards should not be applied to this type of research.
