AbstractA student decides to do her dissertation on the cultural differences in response to pain in cancer patients. Her advisor suggests a medical school where she may be able to do her research, but in reviewing her project proposal, the Institutional Review Board (IRB)decides that her study is too similar to other research that has already been completed, and will unnecessarily burden patients who are already seriously ill. The student is angry and decides to go somewhere else to recruit participants. What are the responsibilities of the student's advisors and department in supporting the student's research? Is going someplace else to recruit participants ethical?
