AbstractThis is one of a series of nine scenarios developed by Michael Loui and C. K. Gunsalus, which asks students to act out a case study looking at the ethical issues raised in the peer review process. This file, in pdf format, includes instructions for use and discussion guidelines, general principles that apply to peer review, a summary, resources, and handouts to be given to various participants. In the case, a professor who acting as a peer reviewer for a manuscript submitted by a rival laboratory would like his graduate student to read and review the paper for practice, and because of some novel ideas that he thinks will help the students' own research. The student is not sure if, according to what he has learned about responsible conduct of research, he should be looking at the paper or if he can use ideas from the paper in his own research.
