AbstractThis is one of a series of nine scenarios developed by Michael Loui and C. K. Gunsalus, which asks students to act out a case study looking at financial and other types of conflict of interest that can occur in scientific research. This file, in pdf format, includes instructions for use and discussion guidelines, general principles that apply in conflicts of interest, summary, resources, and handouts to be given to various participants. The case study involves a student who is working in the lab of his advisor, and splitting his lab time between his own academic work and working for his advisor's company which is based off of a profitable new technology invented and being marketed by the advisor. The student is worried that his work for the company may cut into his time working on his thesis, but is worried about causing trouble. In a discussion with the department's director of graduate studies, a number of the students' concerns and possible conflicts of interests are discussed.
