AbstractOn March 15, 2017, New Zealand passed a law declaring the Whanganui River a legal person. This gives rivers a legal standing in court and rights, which might help protect them from pollution. This also might raise problems for local populations who live along the river, whose urban lifestyle usually harms the river to some extent. Others worry about ascribing rights to apparently non-moral "agents."
