AbstractThis paper describes a method of introducing ethics to a second-year class of civil engineering students. The method, known as a €˜structured controversy€™, takes the form of a workshop where the students assume the identity of stakeholders having an interest in a proposed development in an environmentally sensitive region. The students do not know that the workshop is aimed at introducing them to ethical concepts, so when the connection is revealed after the case study has been played out, the students have a greater understanding and appreciation for the ethical platform they inadvertantly adhered to.
