AbstractWhile there is a well-rehearsed set of societal claims for synthetic biology originating from those creating the field (from above), there is a paucity of empirical studies that attempt to forecast the likely impact of developments ?from below?. Taking inspiration from the movement for ?history from below?, a call is made to develop a movement for ?futurology from below?. Specific proposals for such an approach involve seeking out the knowledge of marginalized communities affected by economic disruption, building a critique of solutionist narratives, partnering with civil society and ensuring that scholars examining societal aspects of this field are not institutionally dependent on those developing synthetic biotechnology.
