AbstractThe Fukushima accidents have changed the proposition of a nuclear renaissance in ways that cannot yet be fully anticipated, but it is likely that the impact on the future of nuclear power will be significant—perhaps more so than Chernobyl was—because Fukushima happened at a pivotal moment in the energy and climate debate. This article reviews the very different responses to the accidents in the United States and Germany, and suggests a key lesson that ought to be learned is the importance of developing energy policy options that can accommodate radical change and not just incremental change.
