AbstractIn 1922 Herbert Hoover sketched an idealistic vision of American society in his book American Individualism. This work was prompted by his strong belief that America and been presented with a monumentous opportunity to break from its European past filled with distracting, if not dangerous, "isms" and societal institutions and promote the ideal of equality and opportunity. This spirit came out in his view of professional engineers as individuals who engineered efficiency and made equality of opportunity possible.
