AbstractThe author of this article proposes a new way of seeing the nature and scope of values education as a way to 'sustain the ethical environment'. The author introduces us to the ethical environment as the 'the surrounding climate of ideas about how to live,' and argues that we can draw a number of illuminating analogies between our responsibility for the quality of the physical environment and our responsibility for the quality of the ethical environment. Therefore, values education can be seen as an important way we can ensure the quality of the ethical environment we live in by putting a positive value on diversity within that environment. This way of seeing the scope of values education also allows instructors to see the responsibilities they have in teaching ethics to their students.
