AbstractRisk communication is not an occupation; and, even if it were, most risk communicators would belong to other occupations, many of which are professions. This brief comment on Thompson's illuminating paper complements his analysis of risk communication by pointing out the different commitments of different professions may affect what is proper risk communication. It also points out that part of good risk communication is giving one's judgment about how to respond to the risk; it is often hard to know what to make of risks without such an expert's judgment about how to respond.
