AbstractThe author outlines how scientific societies can contribute to the promotion of responsible conduct of research (RCR) and to RCR education in science and medicine, and outline three major areas where they can contribute. These include the development and use of codes of conduct that encourage members to practice ethical research according to the tenets of these codes, the adoption of specialized policies that help define normative behavior, and by creating materials and resources aimed at educating scientists and trainees in matters pertaining to proper research conduct. The author uses the American Society for Microbiology as an example of how one scientific society has done this.
