| Abstract | This author looks at engineering codes of ethics and shows how their inability to coerce members of a profession into good behavior can lead to a shift in how we understand how a code of ethics functions. The author suggests that codes be used a an emblem of social identity, or guidelines that are proscriptive rather than prescriptive. |
