AbstractThis essay considers the potential value of philosophy as a distinct subject in the high school curriculum. The author argues that a more deliberate engagement with philosophy can contribute in significant ways to an education focused on helping students cultivate a sense of self and her place in the world, and helping students learn how to deliberate respectfully and ethically across deep differences for the purpose of moving toward a just and democratic social-political order.
