AbstractThis article discusses a case study looking at the way in which Monsanto "bet the company" on agricultural biotechnology and how it handled some of the ethical issues raised by this decision, including issues of intellectual property. The use of patenting, contracts, and using genetic technology to render seeds sterile after one use, thereby preventing seed-saving and ensuring farmers would have to repurchase seeds from Monsanto every year are discussed.
