AbstractThis article looks at three different senses of what is meant by the term "business ethics" and how each of these senses gives priority to one strand of business ethics history. The author looks at the primary sense of the term that began in the 1970's in academic circles, the moral general sense used in media and public discourse surrounding either business scandals or what can be called "ethics in business," and finally, the movement within business to explicitly build ethics into the structures of corporations in the form of ethics codes, ethics officers, ethics committees and ethics training. The article digs into these different senses and also looks at the different meaning of business ethics in the U.S. and also worldwide.
