AbstractThe case first asks students to calculate the heat transfer rate through a plane surface, a calculation that is useful in designing a wall. The student is then presented with a case study where they are asked to do this same calculation for a project renovating a series of old offices on a military base. You do your calculations based on the a set of new military specifications and come up with a plan that calls for more expensive insulation to be used than first budgeted for. The engineering manager of your company disagrees, and presses you to proceed with the less expensive design that will not meet these new specifications.
