AbstractThis article discusses some whistleblowing cases that occurred from 1960-1990, and highlights some of the difficulties and dangers they have faced, even though their actions have often been indispensable for the maintenance of honest science. The author then moves to looking at the problems that face many young scientists today, and the stresses to which they are exposed in an increasingly competitive atmosphere. The author concludes that we must find ways to relieve these pressures if we want to continue to maintain and improve the moral atmosphere in which science is practiced.
