| Abstract | The author discusses how, in media ethics studies, utilitarianism is often taught as a asimplistic arithmetic formula: Do the greatest good for the greatest number. The approach, when applied to the work of John Stuart Mill, misinterprets this philosopher and robs media ethics discussions of the rich reflection that an important classical theory can bring. The author discusses ways in which to introduce mass media and journalism students to utilitarianism in a meaningful and helpful way. |
