Ghost authors may be employed by industry to prepare clinical trial results for publication. An expert is then “hired” as author so as to lend an air of credibility and neutrality to the manuscript. Ghost authorship is ethically questionable in that it may be used to mask conflicts of interest with industry. As it has been demonstrated that industry sponsorship of clinical trials may be associated with outcomes favorable to industry, this is problematic.</style>
<doi><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">10.1080/08989620590957175</style></doi><issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">2</style></issue><work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Article</style></work-type><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">17523066</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Ngai, Stephanie 1; Gold, Jennifer L. 1,2; Gill, Sudeep S. 1,3; Rochon, Paula A. 1,4; Email Address: paula.rochon@utoronto.ca; Affiliations: 1: Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied Research Unit, Baycrest Centre For Geriatric Care, Toronto, Ontario; 2: Department of Law and Public Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA; 3: Faculty of Medicine, Queen's University, Kingston Ontario; Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Toronto, Ontario; 4: Departments of Medicine and Public Health Sciences, University of Toronto; Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Toronto, Ontario; Issue Info: Apr2005, Vol. 12 Issue 2, p103; Thesaurus Term: RESEARCH; Subject Term: AUTHORSHIP; Subject Term: MEDICAL literature; Subject Term: LIFE sciences literature; Subject Term: MANUSCRIPTS; Subject Term: ARCHIVES; Subject Term: MORAL &amp; ethical aspects; Subject Term: CLINICAL trials; Subject Term: JOURNALISM, Medical; NAICS/Industry Codes: 519120 Libraries and Archives; Number of Pages: 12p; Document Type: Article</style></notes></record></records></xml>
