Using the analysis of compassion developed by the French phemonologist Emmanuel Housset, the authors clarify how personal feelings can be a solid basis for moral education. The authors propose having students keep a portfolio that can help the student see how important language is in expressing and solving moral dilemmas that arise in medical practice, help them avoid the pitfalls of emotivism and ethical subjectivism, and help show the student that moral responsibility is more than following rules and that they are involved personally.
