Researchers recruit individuals to participate in clinical trials in order to advance medical science. Yet other interests, both financial and non-financial, may also influence researchers' recruitment activities, and may rise to the level of a conflict of interest. Non-financial interests such as enhancement of academic standing, prestige, and reputation are deeply rooted in clinical research. Of more recent concern are increasingly common financial conflicts of interest, especially with industry playing a larger role in clinical research.
